Snow Day!

There is nothing better than waking up to your 5:12 am alarm and reading this text message...
In about two seconds flat, I went from half asleep to wide eyed and excited. I clicked through my 5 other text messages from co-workers that all said SNOW DAY! It is pretty much like Christmas morning to teachers in the middle of the long winter months. "Brian, I have a snow day!" I said as a tapped him awake. He smiled and said, "Great, go back to bed..." And so I did. I slept in.

After waking up a few hours later, we stumbled into the kitchen and poured coffee that had brewed hours before for my usual early work morning. I clicked on the Today Show, which I never get to see, and was slightly disappointed when it was interrupted for extended periods of time for Winter Storm coverage. But, I was willing to roll with the punches. Because it was a snow day.

I threw on my Hunters and winter coat over my pajamas and headed downstairs with Brian to check out the snow and pick up some breakfast at the deli on the corner.
Sometimes, I miss having a car and wish I could jump in the driver's seat at a moment's notice instead of walk blocks to the subway and sit on crowded trains. But today was not one of those days. I have sympathy for anyone who attempted to dig their car out today.
Blizzards do something very interesting to New York City. They make it quiet, and calm, and clean. Eventually, the streets are plowed, the sidewalks are covered with the day's garbage, and the white fluffy snow turns to brown, icky slush. But the morning after 19 inches of snow falls everything is covered in a thick, beautiful white blanket of snow untouched by the grittiness of the city.
After spending a few minutes outside, we headed in and stayed there for the rest of the day. We ate omelets as we watched a movie in our pajamas and took a mid-afternoon nap because we could. I also had the time to get some small things done around the apartment that had been piling up all week, and Brian saved me by doing my laundry and grocery shopping. Start to finish, my snow day was relaxing and exactly what I needed. And getting to spend an unexpected day with Brian was even better then the unexpected time off of work. Cheers to snow!

  2. That is unbelievable!!! I have to say, I kinda secretly wish we'd get snow like that. I know it's not safe and everything, but I would LOVE to play in it. :)
