Boston quickly found a place in my heart after I started dating Brian, who was born and raised in the Boston area. I have so many fond memories from our times together in that city- laughing and talking on a shaded bench in Boston Common, eating pasta in the North End, biking through the Back Bay, and cheering on our beloved Sox at Fenway. Boston is our happy place.
I am still in shock from the events in Boston yesterday, and deeply saddened by the hatred that hurt so many. My heart is with everyone who was affected by this tragedy. With all of the horrible thoughts and images swimming around in my head, it is helpful for me to return to a quote that has comforted me in the past:
When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping." To this day, especially in times of 'distaster,' I remember my mother's words, and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers- so many caring people in this world. -Fred Rogers
Right now I am continuously reminding myself of the helpers yesterday who immediately jumped into action. The people who selflessly ran towards the explosions to rescue wounded spectators and runners. The helpers, the heros, always give me hope.
