Long Island City

A few weeks ago Brian and I took Greta to Long Island City for the first time. Before walking along the waterfront park we stopped in LIC Flea & Food for lunch. We started with an empanada from Empanada Papa and a BBQ sandwich from Miss Holly's Smokehouse. The BBQ was so delicious we went back immediately to Miss Holly's for a second! It was really nice enjoying the summer day as a family of three.

Mourning.

I was greatly saddened to read that the battle to save 5 Pointz was lost early this morning. The art space was covered in white paint throughout the night and only remnants of the graffiti are now visible. A peaceful candlelight vigil will be held for 5 Pointz tonight at 5 pm for people to say goodbye to this amazing Queens landmark.

I will forever cherish my visits to 5 Pointz and the pictures I have from them. These photos were taken during my final visit to the space in late October. The colors, energy, and pieces were phenomenal that day and I am so glad Brian and I took the time to walk around and admire them all.
New York City will be mourning the loss of 5 Pointz for a very long time.

LIC Flea

I was so excited when I heard that the Flea was making its way to my borough. Go Queens! I am a big fan of the Brooklyn Flea, and was eager to check out Long Island City's version this summer.

I met up with Natalie, from The SoHo, to explore the flea and grab some lunch last weekend. Despite the rainy weather, we had a great time catching up over our favorite market meals. Natalie enjoyed a lobster roll from Luke's Lobster and I loved my tacos from Oaxaco Taqueria. I was impressed with all of the food vendors and have been craving my watermelon mint lemonade ever since I left!

Some of the perks of the new LIC Flea:
  • There is a free shuttle bus that picks up from 30th Avenue and 31st Street every Saturday and Sunday at 11 am and 1 pm. You can sign up for free shuttle service here. The shuttle arrived right on time and made my commute to the Flea a breeze!
  • If you follow LIC Flea on Facebook you can find out about upcoming free events. The weekend I attended there was free kayaking in Anable Basin, which looked really fun.
  • The Flea is located one block away from the iconic Pepsi sign and the beautiful Gantry Plaza State Park. The views of Manhattan are breathtaking!
I am looking forward to going back to the Flea in less rainy weather, and am hoping that even more vendors set up in the sunshine!
